Historical Stonewall County Obituary Records

Stonewall County death records from the early 1900s document the farming and ranching families who settled the Rolling Plains. The county was organized in 1888 and named for Confederate General Stonewall Jackson. Early settlers came to raise cattle and plow cotton on the red clay soils. The Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos River provided water for early communities. The Dust Bowl years of the 1930s were especially hard here, as wind erosion stripped topsoil and drought killed crops. Population peaked around 1930 and has declined since. The Texas State Library holds microfilm of early county vital records. FamilySearch has indexed Texas death collections with Stonewall County entries.
