Historical Wharton County Obituary Records

Wharton County death records from the early 1900s reflect the cotton farming and cattle ranching families of the Coastal Prairie. The county was organized in 1846 and named for brothers William and John Wharton, who were prominent figures in the Texas Revolution. Cotton gave way to rice as the main crop after irrigation systems were developed in the late 1800s, and Wharton County became a significant rice-producing area. Czech and German immigrants arrived in the mid-to-late 1800s and established communities with churches and schools that maintained their heritage well into the 20th century. The Texas State Library holds microfilm of early county vital records. FamilySearch has indexed Texas death collections with Wharton County entries.
