Historical Zavala County Obituary Records

Zavala County death records from the early 1900s document the ranching families and later the agricultural workers who came to the Winter Garden area. The county was organized in 1858 but remained sparsely populated for decades. The discovery of artesian water in the early 20th century transformed the area into a major vegetable growing region. Crystal City was not founded until 1907 and grew rapidly as a company town built to house spinach workers. The county has been a center of Mexican-American political organizing since the 1960s, when La Raza Unida Party emerged from Crystal City. The Texas State Library holds microfilm of early county vital records. FamilySearch has indexed Texas death collections with Zavala County entries.

The Texas DSHS Vital Statistics Section maintains the statewide death record index that includes Zavala County entries from 1903 to the present.
